(11: Xinmao [791 CE]) An imperial edict was issued transferring Chan Master Huaiyun of Zhangjing Monastery in the capital to take up residence at the superior monastery. Followers of the profound gathered like spokes at a hub. Yun instructed the assembly, saying: “The ultimate principle transcends speech. People of the world, failing to comprehend it, force themselves to practice other matters and take that as spiritual achievement, not knowing that self-nature is originally not an objective realm. It is an exquisite and great gateway to liberation. Whatever perception and awareness [arise], they are neither defiled nor obstructed. Such radiance has never ceased or been abandoned; from past kalpas until now, it has indeed never altered, just like the solar disc shining everywhere, near and far. Though reaching all colors, it does not blend with anything. The wondrous illumination of the spiritual torch does not depend on forging or smelting. Because they do not understand it, they grasp at material forms, just as conjuring up monstrosities and vainly giving rise to flowers in the sky, wearing themselves out to no purpose and passing through kalpas in vain. If one can reflect back upon oneself, there is no second person; all movements and deeds will never fall short of the true mark.” (Styled Boyan, surnamed Xie. During the turmoil of Jin he vowed to wear the monastic garb. Quan Deyu composed his memorial inscription. The rest is as in the *Record of the Transmission of the Lamp*.)
