(20. Bingshen) [816 CE] Chan Master Yinfeng of Mount Wutai went from Mount Heng to Mount Wutai. His path took him through Huaiyou when Wu Yuanji was entrenched with his troops in Caizhou, defying the imperial command. The imperial army and the rebels were locked in battle, with victory yet undecided. The Master said: 'I must relieve this affliction a little.' He then shook his monk's staff in the air and flew across. The officers and soldiers of both armies looked up in astonishment, and their will to fight suddenly subsided. On account of this, the imperial army was able to accomplish its victory. The Master had the surname Deng. In his youth, he seemed dull-witted, so his parents permitted him to enter the monastic life. Having received the full precepts, he visited Mazu and attained enlightenment under his words. One day, as he was pushing a cart, Mazu stretched his legs out across the path. The Master said, 'Please pull back your feet.' Mazu said, 'I have already stretched them out and will not pull them back.' The Master said, 'I have already pushed forward and will not retreat.' He then pushed the cart, running over and injuring Mazu's foot. Mazu returned to the Dharma hall holding an axe and said, 'The one who just ran over and injured this old monk's foot, come out!' The Master stepped forward before Mazu and stretched out his neck to meet the axe. Mazu then laid down the axe. Thereafter, the Master traveled through various quarters, performing miraculous marvels wherever he went. After some time, as his supernatural marvels became widely known, he feared they would confuse the multitude. He therefore entered Mount Wutai in front of the Vajra Cave, and being about to pass away, asked the assembly: 'I have seen people in various places pass away sitting down or lying down. Has anyone passed away standing up?' The assembly said, 'Yes, there have been such.' The Master said, 'Has anyone passed away upside down?' The assembly said, 'Never has there been such.' The Master thereupon inverted himself, standing on his head, and passed away. Perfectly upright, his robes also draped naturally along his body. The assembly went to lift the corpse for cremation, but it remained motionless. People from near and far gazed in worship and wonder. The Master had a younger sister who was a nun, who was also present at that time. She approached him and chided him, saying: 'Old brother, in ordinary days you disturbed the various regions and did not follow the monastic laws; in death, are you again going to confuse people?' She then pushed him with her hand, and with a thud he fell down. Thereupon he was cremated, and his relics were collected and enshrined in a stūpa on Mount Wutai.
