(29) Chan Master Dadian was a native of Chaoyang. He studied under Upādhyāya Shitou of Nanyue. One day Shitou asked, 'What is Chan?' The Master said, 'Raising the eyebrows and moving the eyes.' Shitou said, 'Aside from raising the eyebrows and moving the eyes, show me your original face.' The Master said, 'I ask the Upādhyāya to examine me aside from raising the eyebrows and moving the eyes.' Shitou said, 'I have completely set them aside.' The Master said, 'I have already presented it to the Upādhyāya.' Shitou said, 'Since you have presented it, what is my mind like?' The Master said, 'It is no different from the Upādhyāya's.' Shitou said, 'That has nothing to do with you.' The Master said, 'Originally there is not a single thing.' Shitou said, 'You too are not a single thing.' The Master said, 'Not being a single thing is precisely the real thing.' Shitou said, 'The real thing cannot be grasped; such is the direct perception of your mind. You must take great care to protect and maintain it.' Later, the Master returned to reside on Mount Ling in Chaoyang. He once instructed the assembly, saying: 'Those who study the Path must know their own fundamental mind. I often see people of today only recognize raising the eyebrows and moving the eyes, a single word or a single silence, and blindly take that as a confirmation, considering it the essential point of mind. This is truly not understanding. I will now explain it clearly for you; each of you must listen. Merely eliminate all false conceptual thinking and immediate impressions, and that is your true mind. This mind has no relation whatsoever to defiling objects or to maintaining stillness. The mind itself is Buddha; it does not await cultivation. Why? Responding to occasions and illuminating accordingly, it acts cleanly and spontaneously. Exhausting the place where it operates, nothing can be found at all. Calling it the wondrous function, it is none other than the fundamental mind. You must take great care to protect and maintain it; it must not be taken lightly.' Vice Minister Han Yu once asked, 'What is the Dao?' The Master remained silent for a long time. At that time, Sanping was serving as the attendant, and he struck the Chan seat. The Master said, 'What are you doing?' Sanping said, 'First shake it with samādhi, then pluck it out with wisdom.' Tuizhi said with joy, 'I asked the Master about the Dao, but instead found an entry through the attendant.' Thereupon he took his leave and departed.
