15.45

（三十三）　是年白居易。由中書舍人出為杭州刺史。聞鳥窠和尚道德。枉駕見之。時鳥窠因長松槃屈如蓋。遂棲止其上。居易問曰。禪師住處甚危險。師曰。太守危險尤甚。曰弟子位鎮江山。何險之有。師曰。薪火相交識浪不停。得非險乎。又問。如何是佛法大意。師曰。諸惡莫作眾善奉行。居易曰。三歲孩兒也解恁麼道。師曰。三歲孩兒雖說得。八十翁翁行不得。居易欽歎而去。自是數從之問道。

(33) In this year, Bai Juyi left his post as Secretariat Drafter to become the prefect of Hangzhou. Hearing of the virtue of Upādhyāya Niaoke, he took the trouble to visit him. At that time, Niaoke was perched in a tall pine tree that curled like a canopy, dwelling on top of it. Juyi asked, 'The Chan master's dwelling is extremely precarious.' The Master said, 'The Governor's danger is even greater.' Juyi said, 'My position guards the rivers and mountains; what danger is there?' The Master said, 'Firewood and fire meet, and waves of consciousness do not cease; is this not dangerous?' Juyi further asked, 'What is the grand meaning of the Buddha's teaching?' The Master said, 'Do no evil; practice all good.' Juyi said, 'Even a three-year-old child can say this.' The Master said, 'Though a three-year-old child can say it, an eighty-year-old man cannot practice it.' Juyi bowed in admiration and departed. From then on, he frequently visited him to inquire about the Dao.
