(35) Chan Master Chongxin of Longtan in Lizhou was originally the son of a pancake vendor in Zhugong. History has lost his family name. In his youth he was brilliant and remarkable. At first, Chan Master Tianhuang Daowu resided at Tianhuang Monastery, and no one could fathom him. The Master lived in an alley near the monastery and daily presented him with ten pancakes. Daowu accepted them, and whenever he ate, he exceptionally left one pancake behind, saying: "I give this to you to benefit your descendants." One day, Chongxin retired and reflected privately: "The pancakes were brought by me; why does he turn around and give one to me? Could there be some other meaning?" Thereupon he went and asked. Daowu said: "You brought it; what fault is there in returning it to you?" Hearing this, the Master somewhat grasped the profound meaning and accordingly requested to leave home. Daowu said: "Formerly you revered blessings and goodness; now you have faith in my words. You may be named Chongxin (Revering Faith)." From this time on, he served and attended him diligently. One day he asked: "Since I arrived, I have not received your instruction in the essentials of the mind." Daowu said: "Since you arrived, I have never ceased to instruct you in the essentials of the mind." Chongxin said: "Where have you instructed me?" Daowu said: "When you hold up tea, I take it for you; when you bring food, I receive it for you; when you bow, I lower my head. Where have I not instructed you in the essentials of the mind?" The Master lowered his head for a long time. Daowu said: "When you see, see directly on the spot; if you deliberate and reflect, you are mistaken." On the spot, the Master was enlightened. He then asked again: "How should I preserve it?" Daowu said: "Give free rein to your nature in easy freedom, adapt to conditions and be unfettered. Merely exhaust ordinary worldly thoughts; there is no separate holy understanding." The Master later went to Longtan in Liyang to dwell. A monk asked: "Who attains the jewel in the topknot?" The Master said: "One who does not prize it." The monk said: "Where is it placed?" The Master said: "If there is a place, then tell me." Li Ao asked: "What is tathatā-prajñā?" The Master said: "I have no tathatā-prajñā." Li Ao said: "How fortunate I am to meet the Venerable!" The Master said: "These are still words outside the bounds." The dialogue with Deshan is recorded in full in his own biography.
