(Thirty-one; wuyin) An imperial decree summoned Master Xuanyuan of Luofu. Wang Pu, Left Reminder of the Chancellery, and others submitted memorials admonishing against this. The imperial rescript replied: "I personally handle the myriad affairs of governance, and the matters of the state are manifold. Having heard from inquiries that Xuanyuan Ji, a retired scholar of Luofu, is skilled at nurturing life and has attained old age without growing decrepit, I sent an envoy to welcome him, hoping that he might offer some small principle of preservation. Whenever I examine previous histories and see the matters concerning the First Emperor of Qin and Emperor Wu of Han, I always take them as warnings. You, my ministers, have duties in the remonstrance office; having read your submitted memorials, I deeply accept your sincerity." He further said to the prime minister: "Explain to the remonstrance officials for me that even if Shaoweng and Luan Da were reborn, they could not deceive me. I merely heard that Xuanyuan is an eminent scholar and wished to have a single conversation with him, nothing more." Shortly thereafter, Xuanyuan Ji arrived. The Emperor asked him: "You, Sir, have attained advanced longevity; can long life be achieved?" He replied: "Dismiss sound and sex, abandon rich flavors, unify grief and joy, and broaden kindness and benevolence; then one will unite in body with Heaven and Earth and share brilliance with the sun and moon. This is long life; it is not to be sought externally." The Emperor respected and honored him.
