(32) Mount Potalaka, the site where Avalokiteśvara manifests. During the Dazhong era of the Tang, a monk from Tianzhu arrived. Within a cave, he burned all ten of his fingers, personally beheld the wondrous form [of the Bodhisattva], was taught the wondrous Dharma, and was bestowed a stone colored like the seven precious gems; thus the wondrous traces first became renowned. Later, the Japanese monk Huie obtained a painted image of the Bodhisattva from Mount Wutai and wished to return to his home country. When his boat reached the cave, it was impeded and could not move forward. He then deposited the image at the gate of the local layman Zhang. Having repeatedly witnessed divine anomalies, Zhang donated his residence to be converted into the Guanyin Cloister. (The Changguo Record says: "In the second year of the Zhenming era of the Liang dynasty, a monastery was first constructed here.") The regional military commander heard of this and dispatched an official envoy to welcome the image to the city to pray for blessings for the populace. Shortly thereafter, there was a monk of unknown name who obtained fine timber from the assembly, locked his doors, and carved an image. After a full month, the image was complete, but the monk was nowhere to be seen. The image enshrined at present is this very one. (King Shi Yue notes in his record of the reconstruction of the monastery:) In the third year of the Yuanfeng era of the Song dynasty, Wang Shunfeng was sent as an envoy to Samhan. Upon arriving here, a dark gale abruptly arose, and a gigantic sea-turtle bore the boat. Praying toward the mountain, the Great Being manifested his form, and the boat became steady. Upon returning to court, he reported this. The imperial court bestowed gold and silk, and relocated the monastery, building it on the southern side of Mount Meiling, granting it the plaque name Baotuo. Whenever prayers for rain or sunshine were offered, there was always an immediate response. Coming down to the present Yuan dynasty, incense has been bestowed, fields have been granted, and the monastery buildings have been refurbished anew, to bring blessings to the state and perpetuate the imperial reign forever.
