[27] Chan Master Huileng of Changqing in Fuzhou manifested his entry into cessation. He was a native of Yanguan in Hangzhou, surnamed Sun. In his youth, his nature was pure and untroubled. At the age of thirteen, he underwent pravrajyā and received the precepts at Tongxuan Monastery in Suzhou. He visited and studied in various Chan quarters. In the fifth year of the Qianfu era of the Tang, he entered the region of Min. He called upon Xiyuan and visited Lingyun, but still harbored obscurities and hesitations. He then went to Xuefeng and asked, "Regarding the single path transmitted and received by all the sages from above, please bestow instruction." Xuefeng remained silent. The Master bowed and withdrew. Xuefeng smiled gently. Another day, Xuefeng said to the Master, "I usually say to the monks, 'There is a blunt-nosed snake on the Southern Mountain; all of you should look closely.'" [The Master] replied, "Today a great many people have lost their lives." Xuefeng approved of this. When the Master entered the abbot's quarters to consult him, Xuefeng said, "What is this?" The Master replied, "Today the weather is clear, good for communal labor." From then on, in his responses to questions, he never failed to meet the profound purport. He then composed a verse: / "Within the myriad phenomena, the body alone is revealed; / Only when one acknowledges it oneself does it then become intimate. / In the past, I mistakenly sought it along the road; / Today, seeing it is like ice inside fire." / The Master traveled back and forth to Xuefeng for twenty-nine years. In the third year of the Tianyou era, he accepted the invitation of Wang Yanbin, Prefect of Quanzhou, to reside at Zhaoqing. Later, the Military Commissioner of Min invited him to dwell at the West Monastery of Changle Prefecture, which petitioned for the plaque reading "Changqing." He was titled Great Master Chaojue. Ascending the hall, after a long silence he said to the assembly: "Does anyone still understand? If you do not understand, you are deceiving your brothers. Right now, what matter is there? Could it be obstructed? Furthermore, whose household affair is this? If you are unwilling to take it up, what are you waiting for? If one is of sharp faculties and studies through inquiry, one does not come here. Do you understand? Nowadays there is a sort of itinerant monk: though their ears are completely filled, even if they manage to retain it, does that amount to the business of your itinerancy?" The full account is detailed in the Chuandeng lu. The Master established teachings in two places, with fifteen hundred followers. His transformative guidance circulated in Min and Yue for twenty-seven years. On the seventeenth day of the fifth month in the renchen year, the third year of the Changxing era of the Later Tang, he returned to cessation, aged seventy-nine, with sixty rains retreats.
