[30] A commoner of Shangyuan County in Jiangnan died suddenly. After three days, he revived. He went to the ruler of Tang and memorialized in full: "I entered the underworld and saw the late Emperor, who said: 'I was led astray by Song Qiqiu into slaughtering more than a thousand surrendered soldiers of Hezhou. Their plaint of grievance relies upon you. Go back and tell the succeeding sovereign: whenever temples and monasteries strike their bells, they should prolong the sound. When I suffer torment, only upon hearing the bell is there a temporary respite; or if he could cast a bell on my behalf, that would be even better. When I was on the throne, the state of Khotan once presented me with a jade Heavenly King image, which I concealed in the left knee of the Buddha at Waguan Monastery. No one knows of it. You shall take this as proof.'" The ruler of Tang then went to Waguan Monastery and retrieved the Heavenly King image from the Buddha's knee. Moved to tears, he cast a bell at Qingliang Monastery, engraving upon it: "Offered for the Supreme Ancestral Forebear, Emperor Gao, to deliver him from the underworld and release him from distress." Using the jade image, he erected a stupa and buried it at Jiangshan (derived from the Fafan).
