17.87

（廿五）　魏府興化存獎禪師。詔入內庭。帝問禪要。御賜馬一疋。不慣墜馬傷足。至次年示疾。帝一日謂師曰。朕收大梁得一顆無價明珠。未有人酬價。師曰。請陛下珠看。帝以手展開幞頭脚。師曰。君王之寶誰敢酬價。師化後。勅諡廣濟大師。塔曰通濟。師嘗問僧。什麼處來。曰崔禪處來。師曰。將得崔禪喝來否。曰不將得來。師曰。恁麼即不從崔禪來。僧便喝。師遂打。師示眾曰。我只聞長廊下也喝。後架裏也喝。諸子汝莫盲喝亂喝。直饒喝得興化向半天裏。住却撲下來氣欲絕。待興化蘇息起來。向汝道未在。何故。我未曾向紫羅帳裏撒真珠與汝諸人。虛空裏亂喝作什麼。師勘克賓。語具傳燈。

(25) Chan Master Xinghua Cunjiang of Weifu was summoned into the inner palace. The Emperor inquired about the essentials of Chan and bestowed an imperial horse. Unaccustomed to riding, he fell from the horse and injured his foot. By the following year, he manifested illness. One day the Emperor said to the Master, "I took Daliang and obtained a priceless bright pearl, yet no one has appraised its price." The Master said, "Please let me see Your Majesty's pearl." The Emperor used his hands to unfold the tails of his turban. The Master said, "Who would dare appraise the price of the ruler's treasure?" After the Master passed away, he was posthumously granted the imperial title Great Master Guangji, and his stūpa was named Tongji. The Master once asked a monk, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "I come from Chan Master Cui." The Master said, "Did you bring along Chan Master Cui's shout?" The monk said, "I did not bring it." The Master said, "If so, then you do not come from Chan Master Cui." The monk then shouted. The Master thereupon struck him. The Master addressed the assembly, saying: "I only hear shouting along the long corridors, and shouting in the latrines. All of you disciples, do not shout blindly and wildly! Even if you shout Xinghua into mid-air so that he stops and crashes down, almost out of breath, wait until Xinghua revives and stands up, and he will say to you: 'Not yet!' Why? I have never scattered genuine pearls inside a purple silk canopy for you people. What are you wildly shouting into empty space for?" The Master's testing of Kebin is recorded in detail in the Chuandeng [lu].
