(25. Gengwu) Dharma Master Zixuan of Changshui was a native of Jiahe. Initially, he relied on Master Hongmin to study the Śūraṅgama Sūtra; upon reaching the phrase "the marks of movement and stillness clearly do not arise," he had an awakening. Hearing that Huijue of Langya was deeply esteemed in his generation for his practice of the Way, he hastened to his gate. Encountering him ascending the hall, he posed a question: "If it is pure and fundamentally thus, why do the mountains, rivers, and great earth suddenly arise?" Jue shouted with a loud voice: "If it is pure and fundamentally thus, why do the mountains, rivers, and great earth suddenly arise?" The Master was suddenly greatly awakened. Jue said to him, "Your school has not flourished for a long time. You should exert your will to uphold it, so as to repay the Buddha's grace." The Master followed his instructions. Later, he resided at Changshui, his assembly numbering nearly a thousand. Following the tenets of Xianshou, he composed a ten-fascicle commentary on the Śūraṅgama Sūtra, which was circulated throughout the world.
