(26) Dharma Master Zunshi of Ciyun at Tianzhu died. His courtesy name was Zhibai, of the Ye family, a native of Ninghai in Taizhou. His mother, Lady Wang, swallowed a bright pearl in a dream and gave birth to him. As he grew older, he took no pleasure in following his elder brother into commerce; he went secretly to Mount Dongye and went forth from home. At the age of twenty, he went to Chanlin to receive the full precepts. In the following year, he studied the vinaya under Shouchu. Shi then entered Guoqing Temple and burned off one finger before the image of Samantabhadra, vowing to transmit the Tiantai teachings. In the early Yongxi era, he came to pay a call on Siming [Zhili], facing north as a disciple. Before long, his understanding and wisdom were pre-eminent. On the anniversary of Zhiyi's passing, he burned his crown through the whole morning, making vows and vigorously practicing the four kinds of samādhi. In the early Chunhua era, the assembly invited him to reside at Baoyun; his lectures never ceased. The miraculous traces of his life are detailed in his primary biography. On the eighteenth day of the tenth month in the first year of Mingdao, he showed illness. He would not use medicines, only expounding the Dharma and exhorting his disciples. On the tenth day, he ordered an image of Amitābha to be requested to bear witness to his end. Come nightfall, he quietly passed away while sitting. He lived sixty-nine years, with fifty summer retreats. On the fourth day of the second month in the following year, the disciples conveyed his bier and buried him below Moon Laurel Peak to the east of the monastery.
