(Twelve) Chan Master Donglin Changzong of Jiangzhou was born into the Shi family of Youxi in Jianzhou. His mother dreamt of a tall man of golden hue holding three stems of white lotus flowers, which he gave to her; she obtained only one stem, while the others dropped to the ground. When she awoke, she was pregnant. Later she gave birth to three sons; the elder two were not raised to adulthood, and Zong was the youngest. At the age of eleven, he relied on Dharma Master Wenzhao of Baoyun Temple to renounce household life (pravrajyā). Eight years later he shaved his head and went to Vinaya Master Qien of Dazhong Temple in Jianzhou to receive full ordination (upasampadā). He first went to Ji Shan in Jizhou to see Master Heshan Zhanzhicai. Cai enjoyed great prestige among people; he invited him to stay, but [Zong] did not remain. Hearing of the Way of Chan Master Nan, he took refuge at Guizong. After a long time, having gained nothing, he departed. Guizong caught fire, and Nan relocated to the South Pagoda of Shimen; [Zong] went again to follow him. When Master Nan moved from Shimen to Huangbo, Jicui, and on to Huanglong, Zong was always there. Over the course of twenty years, he went back and forth seven times in all. Nan appreciated his diligent labor and praised him before the assembly. Zong was confident in his secret transmission and determined to greatly assist the Linji school. Rong Xiuquan, the governor of Hongzhou, invited him to dwell at Letan; some said he was Mazu reborn. Monastics and laypeople vied to see him first. In the third year of the Yuanfeng era, an imperial decree reformed the Donglin Vinaya dwelling in Jiangzhou into a Chan monastery. Scholar Wang Shao of the Guanwen Hall went out to Nanchang and wished to invite Master Baojue Xin. Xin recommended Zong to take his place. Zong, learning of this, traveled by night over a thousand li away. Official notices were dispatched to various commanderies ordering that he be found at all costs; he was found in an isolated valley of Shushan in Xingan, whereupon he accepted the appointment. His disciples said to one another, "Master Yuan once made a prophecy, saying, 'Seven hundred years after my passing, a great being in bodily form will reform my bodhimaṇḍa.' Now his words have come true!" Zong's renown reached the hearing of the Son of Heaven, and an imperial decree appointed him to reside at the Zhihai Chan Cloister of Xiangguo Temple. Zong firmly claimed that, being an old and sick man of the mountains, he could not obey the edict. Yet the prefecture and commanderies pressed him with urgency like flying sparks. His disciples again said to one another, "The Spring of Intelligence has just run dry!" After two months, an imperial decree was obtained granting his request, and he was granted a purple saṃghāṭī and the title Guanghui. His disciples again said to one another, "The Spring of Intelligence is bubbling up again!" In the third year of the Yuanyou era, upon a memorial by the King of Xu, he was given the title Chan Master Zhaojue. Zong had great affinity with monks; under his mallet and whisk, the assembly numbered more than seven hundred, a flourishing of the assembly unseen in recent generations. In the eighth month of the sixth year, he showed illness. On the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, after bathing, he sat peacefully and passed away. On the eighth day of the tenth month, his whole body was buried to the east of Yanmen Pagoda. His worldly age was sixty-seven; he had spent forty-nine summer retreats.
