(25) In this year Chan Master Yunju Yuanyou died. He was of the Wang family, a native of Shangrao in Xinzhou. At age thirteen, he served as a master the śramaṇa Qisheng of Chengtian in Boshan. At twenty-four he was ordained and received the full precepts. At that time Chan Master Nan was at Huangbo; You went to rely on him. For more than ten years, his wisdom and eloquence stood out on their own, his spirit rising above his peers; the assembly, because of this, favored him little, but You took no heed. When Nan died, he left to travel in the Xiang region and thatched a hut on the old foundation of Mazu on Mount Heng. Patch-robed monks followed him, and his renown grew great between the Jing and Chu regions. Xie Shizhi, serving as prefect of Tanzhou, wished to convert the Vinaya residence of Daolin into a Chan monastery, and extended every courtesy to invite You as its first generation abbot. You gladly agreed to come. At Daolin, the buildings were clustered like bee cells and ant nests, layered view upon view; the multitude of images and shrines was foremost in western Xiang. You leveled and cleared them, creating an open hall and Chan chambers to gather students from the four seas. The laborers dared not dismantle the images and shrines, so You hoed and threw them into the river himself, saying, "Originally they were never formed; how can they now be destroyed? If our Dharma does not even admit ordinary sentiment, how could it preserve holy understanding?" In six years the halls and pavilions stood lofty and complete, and then he abandoned them and departed. Traveling to Mount Lu, Prefect Lu of Nankang invited him to abide at Yujian Temple. King Xu, hearing of his fame, memorialized to bestow a purple robe. You composed a verse declining it, saying: "Having been a monk for sixty years, my temples are already white; / I bring no benefit to the Empty Gate, though called one who has left home. / I beg to return the document from the Ministry of Rites, / Lest I betray Elder Lu's patched kāṣāya." When people asked his reason, You said, "The grace of the sovereign and the gift of a prince are not something I dare lightly decline; yet it borders on worldly fame, and it is merely that my Dharma has not reached equality." Wang Anshang, the younger brother of Prince Shu [Wang Anshi], asked You about the Dharma and invited him to Yunju. You said, "It is only to carry these bones to be buried on the peak." He boarded the sedan chair and departed. Disliking the custom of various regions that every death must have a stūpa, You said, "Mountains and streams have limits, but the deaths of monks are endless; in future days there will be no room for stūpas." Thereupon, to the east of the stūpa of the founding master Hongjue, he built an egg-shaped stūpa, saying, "All abbots, unless their physical bodies remain incorrupt or their cremation rains relics, shall have their bones and ashes placed here." To its west he built another egg-shaped stūpa, saying, "All ordinary monks who pass away shall have their bones and ashes placed here." These were called the Three Stūpas. On the seventh day of the seventh month of the second year of the Shaosheng era [1095], at night, he gathered the assembly, recited a verse, and was transformed. His worldly age was sixty-six, and he had spent forty-two summer retreats.
