(31. Jia-shen [1104]) In this year, Chan Master Fayan of Mount Wuzu in Qizhou manifested his passing into cessation. He was surnamed Deng, from Baxi in Jinzhou. He shaved his head and took full ordination in his youth. He traveled to the lecture seats of Chengdu, studied the *Śatadharmā* and Vijñapti-mātra, and fathomed their profundities. Setting them aside, he said, "How can one play the zither with the bridge glued down?" That very day he set out on pilgrimage. Wherever he went, none was sufficient to meet his intent. Arriving at Fushan, he paid homage to Venerable Yuanlu. After a long time with no breakthrough, Yuan said, "I am old. The forge of Baiyun Duan must not be missed." Yan assented. He went straight to Baiyun. Duan said, "Rustic bumpkin from Sichuan, have you come?" Yan bowed and took his place in the assembly. One day, he brought up the story of a monk asking Nanquan about the cintāmaṇi jewel to question Duan. Duan shouted at him. Yan had an awakening, and sweat covered his whole body. He then presented a verse matching his realization: / "Before the mountain lies a patch of idle land; / Hands clasped respectfully, I repeatedly ask the ancestral patriarch: / How many times has it been sold and bought back again? / All out of love for the pine and bamboo drawing in the cool breeze." / Duan nodded to him and said, "The chestnut-burr Chan belongs to you." Yan was once in charge of the mill. A monk watched the millstone turning rapidly, pointed to it, and asked Yan, "Is this a spiritual penetration, or is it the nature of things?" Yan hitched up his robe and walked around the millstone once. The master once addressed the assembly: "The ancients said: like a mirror casting an image, after the image is formed, where is the mirror?" The assembly's responses were not fitting. The master was serving as the warden of the monastic quarters and came in from outside. Duan presented the story to Yan. Yan stepped forward, bowed in inquiry, and said, "There is not much difference." Duan laughed and said, "It takes a person of the Way to manage this!" At first he resided at Simian and then returned to Baiyun. He ascended the hall and said: "You people see the old master moving his lips and tongue and raising the fly-whisk, and immediately construct superior understanding. When mountain birds flock together and the ox wags its tail, you treat it as ordinary. Little do you know that the sound from the eaves does not cease from the rain of the previous ten days, and the flash of lightning still connects to the thunder of the coming night." He also said: "Enlightened, one is the same as the unenlightened, / Returning home to seek the old road. / One character is one character, / One phrase is one phrase. / From youth never falling into emptiness, / At two years old learning to walk. / In clear water the lotus blossoms grow, / Blooming once a year." He also said: "Cheaply selling the fellow carrying the shoulder-pole, / Throwing in three pounds of flax on the scale. / The stuck cargo of hundreds and thousands of years— / Where can this whole body be placed?" Chancellor Zhang said of him that in responding to capacities and receiving people he was aloof, steep, direct, and straightforward, without suffering revision or trimming. How well he knew him! He responded to the world for more than forty years. In his later years he resided at Taiping and moved to Dongshan. On the twenty-fifth day of the sixth month in the third year of Chongning, he ascended the hall to take leave of the assembly. At that time the monastery gate was undergoing earth and timber construction. Yan supervised the labor in person and admonished them: "Do your work and rest well; I shall not return again." He returned to the abbot's quarters, shaved his head, and bathed. The next day, he passed away in the auspicious posture.
