(1) Pan Gu, the first ruler, reigned for 18,000 years. (Liezi says: 'The Revolver is Pan Gu.' Beishan says: 'Heaven rose by one zhang; the earth thickened by one zhang. Pan Gu grew by one zhang. His head reached the extreme east, his feet the extreme west, his left hand the extreme south, and his right hand the extreme north. When he opened his eyes, it was dawn; when he closed his eyes, it was night. His exhalation became heat; his inhalation became cold. His blowing breath formed the wind and clouds; his uttered breath formed thunder and lightning. The four seasons moved thereby, and the ten thousand things were born thereby. In the vastness of the eight bounds and nine domains, who could match his magnitude? In the veneration of the Three Sovereigns and Five Chronicles, who could precede him?' The Gujin ji records that after Pan Gu died, his body divided into material forms and phenomena.)
