Pingshan said: 'Since the demise of Confucius and Mencius, Confucians have not spoken of the Great Way for fifteen hundred years. How could this be the fault of the Buddhists? Coming down to recent times, scholars first began to gloss Laozi and Zhuangzi with Buddhist texts, and gradually extended this to the *Analects*, the *Mencius*, the *Odes*, the *Documents*, and the *Classic of Changes*. Is it not the case that the Way awakened to by these gentlemen was also entered through this gate? That Master Zhang should suddenly turn around and launch this biting counterattack is truly unbenevolent in the extreme! To claim that "the sage is attained without cultivation, and the Great Way is known without learning"—is this not what the Master himself said? The "biased, extravagant, heretical, and evasive words" will also find their rightful place. As for those who possess "talent far exceeding ordinary men," they are the Wangs, father and son, and the Su brothers. To turn against their origins like this—how could they dispute right and wrong or weigh gains and losses? It is precisely because they are swept along in the cycle of the mind of birth and death!'
