20.39

（甲戌）　宋自秦檜專國。士大夫名望者。悉屏之遠方。齷齪委靡不振之徒。一言契合即登政府。仍止除一廳。謂之伴拜。稍出一語。斥而去之。不異奴隷。皆褫其職名閣其恩數。猶庶官。

(Jiaxu) In the Song, ever since Qin Gui monopolized state power, all scholar-officials of renowned reputation were banished to distant regions. Vile, spiritless, and degraded persons who matched his words even once would immediately ascend to high office in the government, yet they only occupied a single hall, called 'attendants in bowing.' If they uttered even a slight remark, they were denounced and dismissed, no different from slaves. All were stripped of their official titles and had their imperial privileges withheld, being treated like common functionaries.
