During the Chunyou era, You Yu of Jinling, styled Erqing, once wrote an inscription on Dahui's sayings: "When Dahui expounded the Dharma, he was uninhibited and vigorous, like Sunzi and Wuzi employing troops, yet broad, vast, and unfathomable like the great sea, where neither fish nor dragons drink without taking their fill. Now I present two instances from what I have heard and seen: When Master Zhu Wengong was young, he took no pleasure in reading contemporary examination literature. Hearing a venerable elder speak on Chan directly pointing to the original mind, he awakened to the clear and numinous matter. At eighteen, when he registered for the examinations, he was studying under Liu Pingshan. Pingshan assumed he would focus on the examination curriculum, but when he searched his trunk, there was only a single fascicle of Dahui's recorded sayings. The following year, he passed the examinations. Therefore, Master Zhu throughout his life deeply understood the marrow of Chan study and its liberating pivot; he was of superior faculty and sharp capacity, taking his fill from it. I heard this early on from Elder Pan Zishan. Thereupon, I took up the recorded sayings and read them, unable to let them out of my hand even into old age. Formerly in Chongling, Xu Xuan, styled Jiqing, of Yongjia, was also banished to that commandery. Soon after, he was suddenly transferred to Xiangtai; in sorrow and distress, he wept. I gave him the copy I carried. Lord Xu quickly took it and read it, remaining awake until dawn. The next day, joyful and forgetting his sorrows, he was an entirely different person compared to the day before. He then took it with him, and only returned it after hand-copying a text. Three years later, Xu died in his place of exile. Nearing the end, it was almost like play; without illness, he bathed and passed away. The spiritual efficacy of this book is like this. This is indeed what I personally witnessed" (and so forth).
