[20. Guimao] In the ninth year of Chunxi, on the nineteenth day of the second month, the Śramaṇa Keguan died. His courtesy name was Yiweng, and he was of the Qi family of Huating. At age sixteen he took the full precepts. He relied on Master Jingwei of Nanping. Hearing that Chexi Zeqing's fame shook Jiangzhe, he shouldered his book-box and followed him. One day, hearing him recite that prajñā is desolate and silent, he suddenly had an awakening, as if having drunk a cup of qi-descending soup. Master Yuhui Jue had an assignment at Hengshan, and Keguan accompanied him, reading the Zhiyao (Essentials). Reaching the line, 'If one does not consider them real, the iron bed is not suffering, and the transformative [body] is not transmigrating,' he sighed and said, 'Spoken words and written letters are all mere chaff.' At the beginning of the Jianyan era, he presided over Shousheng in Jiahe, then moved to Dechang in Danghu. Residing in the Yueshi Hall, he compiled supplementary commentaries to the Śūraṅgama Sūtra. Zhaozhou invited him to Xiangfu; after two years, due to illness, he returned to Nanlin in Danghu. His single room was desolate, which others found unbearable, but he said, 'The pines, wind, mountain, and moon—these are my inexhaustible robes and alms bowl.' In the seventh year of Qiandao, Grand Councillor Wei Qi, departing to garrison Gusu, invited him to preside over Beichan. Keguan entered the gate right on the ninth day [of the ninth month]. Pointing to the seat, he said: 'The inch of ash in my chest has already grown cold; / The thousand strands of snow upon my head have not yet melted. / Old steps are only fit for walking on level ground; / For what reason should I once again climb high?' Lord Wei clapped his hands in endless admiration. In the seventh year of Chunxi, the Imperial Prince, King of Wei, governed Siming (named Kai, posthumously titled King Huixian, the second son of Emperor Xiaozong). Acting upon the recommendation of the late Yuetang's letter, he invited Keguan to preside over Yanqing. Keguan was already eighty-nine years old. Arriving at the provisional capital, he heard that the prince had passed away. Keguan had accepted the invitation while at Tianzhu, and said, 'The Prince's order is as if he were still alive; how could I decline?' He then proceeded to Nanhu. Seeing that his luggage was so meager, the assembly could not help but sigh in admiration. Not two years later, he returned to Zhuan in Danghu, and passed away without illness at the age of ninety-one. Dahui had already passed away twenty years earlier.
