(10) The Imperial Preceptor of the Great Yuan, 'Phags-pa, manifested nirvirṇa in this year. Hanlin Academician Wang Pan and others were commissioned to compose his conduct record, which reads: "Beneath august Heaven, above the single person; Founder of the Teachings, Propagator of Culture, Auxiliary to Governance, Great Sage, of Supreme Virtue, Universally Enlightened, True Wisdom, Protector of the Realm, Wish-Fulfilling Great Treasure Dharma King, Son of the Buddha from the Western Heavens, Imperial Preceptor of the Great Yuan, Pandita 'Phags-pa the Imperial Preceptor, was a native of the land of Tubo. Various auspicious signs at his birth are recorded in detail in his family genealogy. Originally, in Tubo there was the State Preceptor Candra-rakṣita, who possessed great spiritual powers handed down for generations. The kings of that country honored him as a teacher from generation to generation, for seventeen generations down to Sa-skya-ba, who was the Master's paternal uncle. He then took his paternal uncle as his teacher. With esoteric gāthās of one or two thousand words, he could recite them upon a single glance. At the age of seven, he expounded the Dharma, with sweeping and expansive debate, yet he still felt unsatisfied. He again consulted renowned masters everywhere, exploring the mysteries and searching the concealed, thoroughly mastering the Tripiṭaka. In the guichou year, when the Master was fifteen years old, Emperor Shizu's dragon virtue was latent in the depths; the Master knew that the true mandate was settled, and he went directly by courier station to the royal manor. Emperor Shizu's inner palace and the Eastern Palace all received the precept rules and paid him special honor and reverence. In the wuwu year, when the Master was twenty, Buddhists and Daoists corrected the Huahu jing. Emperor Xianzong decreed the Master to analyze the right and wrong; the Daoists could not reply and abandoned their own learning. The Emperor was greatly pleased. In the gengshen year, when the Master was twenty-two years old, Emperor Shizu ascended the throne and established the Zhongtong era, honoring him as State Preceptor, bestowing a jade seal, appointing him as the Dharma Lord of the Central Plains, and placing him in charge of all religious sects under heaven. He took leave of the Emperor to return west, but was recalled before a year had passed. In the gengwu year, when the Master was thirty-one years old, in the seventh year of Zhiyuan, an edict was issued to create a script for the Great Yuan state. The Master alone designed and created it; it met the imperial approval and was promptly promulgated, observed and used by the court, ministries, commanderies, and counties, becoming a standard for an entire era. He was promoted to the title of Imperial Preceptor, Great Treasure Dharma King, and was further granted a royal seal to lead the Buddhist teachings of all countries. Soon after, he returned west again. In the jiaxu year, when the Master was thirty-six years old, in the eleventh year of Zhiyuan, the Emperor dispatched a special envoy to summon him, and he arrived at the capital at the end of the year. Princes, dukes, grand chancellors, ministers, and commoners went out thirty li from the city to erect a great incense altar and set up grand pure offerings. With fragrant flowers, banners, parasols, and divine celestial music, they bowed in array to welcome him. Along the streets he passed, five-colored silks were tied along both sides. Tens of thousands of people gazed upon and paid homage to him as if a Buddha had appeared in the world. At that time, the heavenly troops crossed the Yangzi River like flight, finally completing the unification; although this was brought about by a sage ruler and worthy ministers, it was also due to the Master's hidden assistance. He expounded the Zhang suozhi lun on the bhājana-loka and other subjects for Crown Prince Zhenjin. Soon he again firmly requested leave to return west; the Emperor tried to detain him, but could not. In the gengchen year, when the Master was forty-two years old, on the twenty-second day of the eleventh month of the seventeenth year of Zhiyuan, he manifested nirvirṇa. Hearing of this, the Emperor was overwhelmed with shock and grief. Cherishing his past virtues, he successively built a grand cetiya stupa in the capital to enshrine his true physical relics, magnificent in gold and lapis beyond compare."
