帝。帝問曰。此杖何為。回奏云。身有過失。以杖責之帝曰。過失在心。鞭身何益。與其責身。莫若責心。

[He had an audience with] the Emperor. The Emperor asked: 'What is this staff for?' He replied: 'When the body commits faults, I reprove it with this staff.' The Emperor said: 'Faults lie in the mind; what benefit is there in flogging the body? Rather than reproving the body, it is better to reprove the mind.'
