(8. Renshen) On the fifteenth day of the second month, the Bhagavān manifested nirvāṇa. Having responded to the world for seventy-nine years and his conditions for converting beings being completed, he preached the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* and the *Yijiao jing* between the golden sands of the Hiraṇyavatī River and under the pair of śāla trees in the kingdom of Kuśinagara. He then entered the permanent light of calm extinction called the Great Nirvāṇa, lying on his right side, and passed away quietly in the middle of the night without a sound. Cremation yielded eight bushels and four pecks of relics. (This is fully clarified in the earlier and later portions of the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra*.) At that time, twelve white rainbows extended from south to north, persisting through the night without fading. King Mu asked the Grand Astrologer Huda: 'What omen is this?' He replied: 'In the West, there is a Great Sage; the signs of decline and passing into nirvāṇa have appeared.' The king said: 'I have always worried about this. Now that he has passed into nirvāṇa, what more is there to worry about?' The kings of the western lands cremated his body with fragrant wood, divided his relics, and erected stūpas; in China, nineteen sites are counted.
