(23. Xinyou [61 CE]) The emperor dreamed of a golden man sixteen feet tall, bearing a sun-disc around his neck, flying into the palace courtyard. At dawn, he assembled his ministers to divine the dream. The erudite scholar Fu Yi submitted a memorial, saying: 'Your subject notes that according to the Record of Strange Wonders in the Books of Zhou, on the eighth day of the fourth month in the twenty-fourth year of King Zhao, the jiayin year, at dawn, a violent wind suddenly arose, and the palace and people's dwellings all shook. At night, a five-coloured radiance penetrated through to the Taiwei enclosure, and all throughout the four quarters turned bluish-red. The king asked the Grand Astrologer Su You: "What omen is this?" He answered: "A great sage has been born in the West." The king asked: "What will become of the realm?" He answered: "At this time, there is nothing; after one thousand years, the sounds of his teachings will reach this land." The king ordered this recorded upon stone and buried before the altar of Heaven in the southern suburbs. Calculating by years, up to the present xinyou year it has been one thousand and ten years. What Your Majesty dreamed must surely be this.' The emperor believed it to be so, and immediately dispatched eighteen men, including General of the Gentlemen-of-the-Household Cai Yin and Erudites Wang Zun and Qin Jing, to journey west to seek this path. When they arrived in the kingdom of the Great Yuezhi, they indeed encountered the two Tripiṭaka masters Kāśyapa Mātaṅga and Dharmaratna, who carried an image of white fine-woven cloth—the fourth created by King Udayana—together with the Sūtra of Forty-two Sections. Cai Yin and the others received them with reverence and returned to Luoyang.
