(Gengwu [250 CE]) Second year of Jiaping. Dharmakāla and Bafentuo from Western India arrived in Luoyang, and together with Kang Sengkai and others translated various sūtras. The Commentary on the Four-Part Vinaya states: 'From the Han onwards, the flow of the Dharma began in rudimentary form; bhikṣus merely shaved their hair, but had no vinaya etiquette. Offerings, assemblies, vegetarian feasts, and repentances were handled like ancestral sacrifices. Down to the beginning of the Cao-Wei, it entirely followed the Han manner. When it came to the Jiaping era, the Indian Dharmakāla (translated as "Four Seasons"), the Indian monk Dharmasatya, and the Sogdian monk Zang's teacher Dilichaye—who was a ninth-generation disciple of Ayodhyā—[arrived]. Zang followed after him and was wondrously skilled in the Vinaya school. Following the Buddha's regulation that ten monks be used extensively, and taking the mind of the precepts as daily practice, they established the karmavācanā for receiving the upasampadā. This was the beginning of the vinaya precepts in China.'
