The question was asked: "What is meant by the 'Dao'? What is the Dao like?" Mouzi said: "The word 'Dao' means 'to guide' (dao); it guides people to attain unconditioned non-action (asaṃskṛta). Pulling it, there is no front; leading it, there is no rear; lifting it, there is no top; pressing it down, there is no bottom. Looking at it, it has no form; listening to it, it has no sound. The four directions mark its greatness, winding around their exterior; a fine hair marks its subtlety, coursing through its interior. Therefore it is called the Dao."
