The questioner asked: "It is said that the Buddha has thirty-two marks and eighty minor signs. Why is he so exceedingly different from human beings? This is probably language meant to dazzle the ears, not an account of reality." Master Mou said: "The proverb says: 'He who has seen little wonders at much; seeing a camel, he calls it a horse with a swollen back.' Yao had eyebrows of eight colors; Shun had double pupils; Gao Yao had a horse's muzzle; King Wen had four breasts; Yu had three ear-holes; the Duke of Zhou was hunchbacked; Fuxi had a dragon's nose; Confucius had a concave skull; Laozi had a sun-shaped forehead, deep-set eyes, nostrils with dual columns, the character for 'ten' in his palms, and the characters for 'two' and 'five' on the soles of his feet. Were these not different from ordinary humans? What doubt can there be about the Buddha's marks and signs?"
