Question: "Among people living in the world, none fails to love wealth and honor and detest poverty and lowliness, to delight in joy and ease and dread toil and fatigue. The Yellow Emperor cultivated his nature with the five delicacies as supreme; Confucius did not dislike fine grain nor mincemeat finely shredded. Now the śramaṇas wear red cloth, eat one meal a day, close off the six sense-faculties, and finish their lives in this world. What comfort can there be in this?"

Mouzi said: "'Wealth and honor are what people desire; if they cannot be obtained in accordance with the Way, one does not abide in them. Poverty and lowliness are what people detest; if they cannot be avoided in accordance with the Way, one does not abandon them.' Laozi said, 'The five colors cause people's eyes to be blind; the five tones cause people's ears to be deaf; the five flavors cause people's mouths to lose taste; galloping and hunting cause people's minds to run mad; goods hard to obtain hinder people's conduct. The sage acts for the belly and not for the eyes.' Could these words be empty? Liuxia Hui would not trade his integrity for the position of the Three Excellencies; Duan Ganmu would not trade his person for the wealth of Marquis Wen of Wei. Xu You and Chaofu lived perched in trees, considering themselves more secure than in imperial palaces. Boyi and Shuqi starved on Mount Shouyang, considering themselves more sated than with [the feasts of Kings] Wen and Wu. Each simply attained his own aspiration. What lack of comfort could there be?"
