5.64

問曰。子以經傳之辭華麗之說。褒讚佛行稱譽其德。高者陵青雲。廣者踰地圻。得無踰其本過其實乎。而僕譏刺頗得疹中而其病也。牟子曰。吁吾之所褒。猶以塵埃附嵩岱。收朝露投江海。子之所謗。猶握瓢觚欲減江海。操耕耒欲損崑崙。側一拳以翳日光。舉土塊以塞河衝。吾所褒不能使佛高。子之毀不能令其下也。

Question: "Using the words of the classics and commentaries and florid discourse, you, sir, praise the Buddha's conduct and commend his virtue: in height it ascends past the blue clouds, and in breadth it surpasses the borders of the earth. Could this not exceed its basis and surpass its reality? Meanwhile, my critiques quite hit upon the ailment and its flaws."

Mouzi said: "Alas! My praises are like adding dust to Mounts Song and Tai, or collecting morning dew to cast into rivers and oceans. Your slanders are like grasping a ladle or cup wanting to diminish rivers and oceans, or brandishing a plow-plowshare wanting to damage the Kunlun mountains, or raising a single fist to shade the sunlight, or lifting a clod of earth to block a rushing river. My praise cannot make the Buddha higher; your slander cannot make him lower."
