Appraisal: Since the Han, all under Heaven had been united. After the Jian'an era, the tripartite division first split apart: Yuan and Cao vied for supremacy in the Central Plains; Liu and Sun contested the deer along the Yangtze and the Gorges. The dust of battle swept across the Five Sacred Peaks, and clouds of warriors gathered over the Nine Provinces. Some founded an imperial design in merely two generations; others laid out a hegemonic enterprise through tripartite division. Thus, the progenitor of Wei held the Son of Heaven hostage to command the feudal lords; the Liu lineage relied on Jiange to eye Yong and Liang; and the Sun clan, through ingenious strategy, rested easily along the Yangtze. Claws and teeth displayed martial prowess; the Crouching Dragon exerted formidable might. Each held their own domain with designs to swallow the others; each bestrode frontiers and fortified passes. They broadly invited talented men to aid as their right-hand ministers, and treated the worthy and capable with great courtesy, revering them as national treasures. Skilled artisans and marvelous teachings also came forth at this time. [Kang] Senghui went to Wu, and the sarīra radiated numinous brilliance east of the Yangtze; [Dharmakāla] traveled to Wei, and the prohibitive vinaya was first initiated in the capital of Luoyang. From this point, taking refuge and receiving the precepts flourished greatly, and images and stupas were uniquely established. Translators followed local customs and kept to vernacular idioms; they published scriptures in response to the times and titled them accordingly. Thus, there were Wu editions, Shu editions, and Jin editions shining forth. Duplicate and repeated translations began from this period; the branches and streams of missing translators were indeed rooted right here. Moreover, while the Three Kingdoms stood in rivalry, why is it that the western capital of Shu alone is lacking in the dynastic records? Now, following the chronicles of Great Wu, the clergy and laity of the Wei court are fully listed to the left.
