(25) Xi Chao, whose style name was Jiabin, possessed an extraordinary bearing even in his youth. When discussing principles, he was refined and subtle. He set his sights on admiring the Buddha and was exceptionally fond of practicing dāna. Generalissimo Huan Wen appointed him as an army consultant. At that time, Wang Xun served in the same administration as chief clerk. Chao had a handsome beard, while Xun was short and small. People in the administration said: "The bearded consultant and the short clerk can make his lordship pleased and can make his lordship angry." Once Xie An and Wang Tanzhi visited Wen's residence; Wen had Chao lie behind a screen beforehand to listen to their discussion of affairs. Soon, a gust of wind blew the screen open, and An laughed, saying: "Master Xi can truly be called a guest behind the curtain!" Chao loved reclusion; whenever he heard of someone retiring from office, he would certainly build a house and provide utensils for them. Zhi Daolin often said that his subtlety in philosophical refinement was worthy of joining the Zhengshi era, and held him in high esteem. He was also on close terms with Dharma Master Tai. They once agreed that whichever of them passed away first would report to the other on the karmic retribution in the netherworld. Soon after, Tai passed away. One night he appeared in Chao's dream and said: "The matter of karmic retribution that I previously agreed upon with you is entirely true. I hope you will not forget to cultivate virtue so as to elevate and deliver your divine spirit." From this, Chao's devotion to the Way became all the more resolute.
