(28) Sun Chuo, whose style name was Xinggong, had a father named Chu who possessed high prestige. Chuo was broadly learned and possessed an elegant literary style; together with Xu Xun of Gaoyang, he harbored lofty aspirations. At first he lived in reclusion in the Kuaiji mountains, giving free rein to his passions among the mountains and waters, and composed the "Rhapsody on Fulfilling My Original Aspiration" to express his intent. His friend Daolin asked Chuo: "How do you compare to Xu?" He replied: "Regarding lofty sentiments and far-reaching aspirations, this disciple has long submitted to him with admiration. Yet in chanting and composing poetry, Xu would have to take a back seat." He once composed the "Rhapsody on Mount Tiantai" and showed it to his friend Fan Rongqi, saying: "Try throwing this to the ground; it will surely produce a golden chime!" Rongqi said: "I fear this golden chime will not harmonize with the gong and shang musical notes." Yet whenever he reached an exquisite line, he would invariably say: "This must be the language of our kind!" He authored numerous treatises on our Path, all of which can be seen in the Hongming ji and other collections. He died at the age of fifty-eight. The court historians praised Chuo for having the integrity of self-denial for the public good, and not merely literary elegance.
