(4. Renyin) The origin of the Aśoka stupa in Kuaiji: There was Liu Saha, who fell ill and died, entering the underworld where he saw a monk from India. The monk directed him to go to the site of the Aśoka stupa in Kuaiji to repent. After he revived, he went forth from household life and took the name Huida. When he reached Kuaiji, he searched everywhere but could not find it. One night, he happened to hear the sound of a bell from beneath the earth, and he redoubled his sincerity. After three days, a precious stupa suddenly surged forth from the earth, one foot four inches in height and seven inches wide, complete with all its Buddha statues. After Huida saw the stupa, he diligently bowed and repented, and many auspicious responses appeared. The stupa in Mingzhou had its beginning in this.
