(26. The guimao year [463 CE]) Shi Sengdao was a man of Jingzhao. At the age of ten, he followed his teacher; his learning was vast, and he was revered by kings. Formerly, Yao Xing respected him greatly and shared his carriage in coming and going. Later, the emperor [Xiaowu] took pleasure in his virtue, personally built the Guangshan Temple in Shouchun for him, and commanded him to initiate lectures. He began by saying: "Formerly, the Buddha took birth in the royal palace and manifested extinction in the Twin Trees. Since then, more than a thousand years have passed; the pure source has long ceased, and the decadent customs cannot be turned back. Anāthapiṇḍada's park lies in ruins, and the Deer Park is overgrown with weeds. The ninety-five heretical paths take going down as rising high; the living beings of the three realms take the burning house to be the pure land. How could they know the supreme sage's tears and the Great Being's sorrow?" Thereupon tears poured down his face, and the four assemblies were visibly moved.
