(30) In this year, the Great Being Baozhi roamed between Mount Wan and the Jianshui river. With hair unkempt and bare feet, he wore a brocade robe, and the common people called him Master Zhi. His face was square and clear as a mirror, his hands and feet resembled bird talons. Formerly, the wife of a man named Zhu from Dongyang in Jinling heard a baby crying in an eagle's nest on the Shangsi festival; she climbed the tree with a ladder and took him, raising him as her son. At the age of seven, he went forth under the great monk Sengjian of Mount Zhong, dedicating himself to chan contemplation. By this time, his miraculous traces were revealed. Hanging a pair of scissors, a ruler, and a whisk from the end of his staff, he carried them over his shoulder as he walked. When passing through villages, children clamored and chased after him. Sometimes he asked for a bit of wine; sometimes he did not eat for days. Once, meeting people eating minced raw fish, he begged some from them. The eaters shared it with him, but held a slighting attitude; Zhi immediately vomited into the water, and it all turned into living fish. From time to time he inscribed verses, which at first seemed incomprehensible, but later all proved true.
