"The envoi says: The cosmic cycles proceed, concealing their illumination; / The profound Sage lies hidden, deep in obscurity. / The long night stretches endlessly; / The multitude of stars shine forth brilliantly. / The great blaze flares as the sun ascends; / The stellar constellations suddenly dissolve and fade. / Wheel-rims and spokes come from differing woods, / Yet they accord with the carpenter's line under a single rule. / If one stubbornly clings to delusion without awakening, / The haughty will take fright and wander far away. / Bian He wept bitterly beside Mount Jing; / How could he single out King Li of Chu for blame? / A fine zither is belittled by the obstinate and perverse; / How can one hold them accountable for wisdom?" At that time, there was also Zhu Zhaozhi, Regular Attendant, who followed He Zhenzhi's letter and composed the *Refutation of the Treatise on Barbarians and Xia*, while Zhu Guangzhi wrote the *Inquiry into the Treatise on Barbarians and Xia*; both dissected it chapter by chapter and sentence by sentence, shattering Gu Huan's shallow obfuscation. Zhou Yong of Runan and the eminent monk Huitong both authored refutations of the *Treatise on Barbarians and Xia*, and Huan's work was finally overwhelmed by its own fallacies. There was also the Dharma Master Shaozheng, who composed the *Treatise on the Two Teachings*, summarizing: "The Buddha illuminates the source, while the Dao preserves life. Those who cling to life are deluded; those who illuminate the source penetrate through. Nowadays, the Dao claims longevity and deathlessness, and calls itself supplementary officials of the heavenly administration; this greatly departs from the intent of the words established by Laozi and Zhuangzi."
