9.16

（十一　癸巳）　下詔曰。夫宗廟犧牲修行佛戒。蔬食斷肉省貪絕欲。天下水陸不令蒐捕。又勅太醫不使肉藥。公家織官錦帛並斷。又造斷酒肉文。及著淨業賦。

(11. Guisi) An imperial edict was issued saying: "Those who sacrifice animals in the ancestral temples shall practice the Buddhist precepts, eating vegetables and abstaining from meat, diminishing greed and cutting off desire. Throughout the realm, hunting and fishing on land and water are forbidden." He further ordered the imperial physicians not to use animal ingredients in medicine, and that the official weaving bureau discontinue the production of figured silks [using animal fibers]. He also composed the 'Essay on Abstaining from Alcohol and Meat' and wrote the 'Rhapsody on Pure Karma.'
