(24) Liu Xie was a celebrated scholar, highly esteemed by the Crown Prince. He composed the Wenxin diaolong in fifty chapters. Because his family was poor, he did not marry. Relying on the śramaṇa Sengyou, he became broadly versed in the scriptures and treatises; he categorized them into classes and wrote prefaces for them. The Buddhist canon preserved at Dinglin Monastery was arranged by him. Shen Yue, Director of the Secretariat, exceptionally valued his writings and kept them constantly on his desk. The inscriptions for temples, stupas, and eminent monks throughout the capital were all penned by him. After successively serving as General Receptionist (tongshi sheren), he submitted a memorial requesting pravrajyā. He first burnt his beard to make his vow. The Emperor praised him and bestowed on him the Dharma name Huidi.
