(30) The inner and outer books of the *Seven Records* totaled 44,526 fascicles. Virtually all surviving books and secret records under Heaven were exhausted in this. Among them, the "Record of the Buddhadharma" contained five divisions—sūtras, vinaya, treatises, and so forth—totaling 5,400 fascicles. By the Renshou era of Emperor Wen of the Sui, the books in the Jiaze Hall totaled 370,000 fascicles. And during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang, the Imperial Library followed the order of the four categories of Jia, Yi, Bing, and Ding to arrange the Four Repositories of Classics, Histories, Philosophers, and Anthologies, which together with books authored by Tang scholars totaled 82,374 fascicles. In the "Monograph on Arts and Literature" in the current *History of the Tang*, those recorded in the four divisions total 52,100 fascicles, and those not recorded total 27,630 fascicles, making a total of 79,830 fascicles. Among these, the Buddhist section specifically records the writings authored by twenty-five masters, monastic and lay, totaling only 395 fascicles. Such is the number of books from ancient times to the present.
