(40) The Northern Qi ordered a contest between the two teachings. In the ninth month of the sixth year of the Tianbao era, an imperial decree was issued ordering various śramaṇas and ten accomplished Daoists to debate in person. At that time, the Daoist Lu Xiujing of Jinling and others had originally been dismissed by Emperor Wu of the Liang, and they subsequently fled to the Wei. By this time they flourished considerably. However, Emperor Wen of the Qi also served the Buddha. Xiujing and the others resented this, and went to the imperial palace to request a contest of arts with the sons of Śākya. An imperial decree ordered the Superior Controller to set a date to determine the winner. When the time arrived, the dukes and ministers gathered in great numbers. Xiujing and the others used incantations on the monks' robes and bowls as well as on the palace pillars and beams, causing them all to lift and shake. The monks looked at one another in loss, unable to respond. Thereupon the crowd of ten thousand grew clamorous, deeming the Daoists to have won. Xiujing and his group leapt like sparrows and stared like fish, boasting haughtily and taking themselves to be divine immortals. They also said, "If a śramaṇa manifests one, I will manifest two. Now we are merely tempting them with minor arts." The emperor looked at the Superior Controller and said, "Can it be that the Buddhist gate has no men?" The Controller said, "Esoteric techniques are minor skills despised by the Ruist commonality; how much more so for those who have gone forth from the household? Now that we have received the heavenly command to resist them, the monk of the lowest seat may be ordered to face them." At that time there was a Dharma Master named Tanxian; it was not known where he was from. Sitting in a low position, he sat upright while drunk. The Controller ordered two men to support him up to the high seat. Ascending, he laughed and said, "Earlier, when the robes and pillars were enchanted to fly and move, I deliberately opened the door to test your arts." He ordered the robe and bowl of Chan Master Chou to be brought and placed on the ground, making them enchant them. Xiujing's disciples joined forces to perform their rites, but after prolonged time could not budge them. The emperor ordered that one robe be fetched, and even with ten men added, they could not lift it. Tanxian then took it himself, placed it upon the beam, and made them enchant the beam and pillar; these too could not be moved. Tanxian also said, "Earlier I was drunk and heard it said, 'If a śramaṇa manifests one, I shall manifest two.' Is that indeed so?" Xiujing said, "It is so." Tanxian then raised one foot and said, "I am just manifesting one; please manifest two." Xiujing's disciples remained silent with nothing to do, looking at each other in shame and shrinking with lost color. Only Xiujing still wished to overcome him with his tongue, saying, "Your Buddha himself calls it the 'inner' (nei); 'inner' means small. He calls the Daoist school the 'outer' (wai); 'outer' means great." Tanxian responded to his words, "If that is so, then does the Son of Heaven, who dwells within the ninefold [palace], also have to be smaller than the hundred civil officials?" Xiujing choked on his breath and had no reply. The officials all cried "Ten thousand years!" and dispersed in joyful delight. Tanxian's demeanor was vast and expansive, and his leanings were unfathomable; his end was subsequently unknown. The emperor personally evaluated their merits and faults on the first day, yimao, of the tenth month. In that month, on the bingchen day, Emperor Wen decreed: "The Dharma gate is not two; the true Dharma rests in one. In seeking its correct path, serenity is the foundation. The libationer Daoists of middle antiquity were false and fraudulent; worldly people have not awakened and thus revere them. Taking yeast and grain as their taste, they extinguish and obscure the empty lineage. Not only do they run contrary to the source of benevolent offerings, they also violate the rules of ritual codes. They should be prohibited; none may follow their customs. Daoists who claim to have attained divine immortality may ascend the Sanque Terrace and fly up high; those who cannot do so should all reform their delusions and return to correctness, proceeding to the Superior Controller of Zhaoxuan to shave their heads and leave the household." Thereupon, the Daoist lineages in the territory of the Qi were completely extinguished.
