([Year] 2) In the twelfth month of this year, an imperial decree ordered that at the battlefield below the walls of Yangzhou, a temple be built, bestowed the name Jianlong, and granted four qing of land; the monk Daohui was ordered to preside over it. Earlier, Zhou had abolished 30,300 Buddhist temples and melted down the Great Compassion image of Zhenzhou to cast coins. Shizong had personally wielded a battle-axe and pierced its breast; in less than four years, an ulcer ruptured on his breast. The Emperor [Song Taizu], together with Taizong, witnessed this event in person; therefore he asked the divine monk Mayi: "When will the realm be settled?" Mayi said: "Only in the jiazi year will it be greatly settled." He further replied with the disasters of the three Wu [emperors] who abolished the teaching. The Emperor deeply agreed with this. When he ascended the throne, he repeatedly built Buddhist temples and ordained eight thousand monks each year. (Taken from the commentary of Ouyang's Outer Biography).
