(5. Guiwei) The Bhagavān manifested attaining enlightenment. Having completed six years of asceticism, he bathed in the Nairañjanā River, accepted milk-rice from the cowherd maiden, received the soft auspicious grass, went to the Bodhi tree king, sat on the vajra seat, and through thirty-four mind-moments manifested true awakening, styled Teacher of Gods and Humans, endowed with all-knowledge. Remaining in the world to deliver teachings for forty-nine years, he expounded the Dharma in three turnings, good in the beginning, middle, and end. With words of existence and emptiness he shattered attachments to emptiness and existence; once the two extremes were abandoned, the Middle Way was preserved, prompting sharp and dull capacities alike to cultivate their own practice. Therefore, he unfolded and extended it into the eighty-four thousand treasuries of Dharma. Extending charity widely to deliver the multitudes, cause and effect were displayed; severing evil and rewarding good, sage and ordinary were distinguished. From this, all sentient beings had something to rely upon.
