(32. Jiayin) The ninth patriarch, Buddhamitra, was a native of the country of Dighe, of the Vaiśāla clan. Having received the transmission and entrustment from Buddhanandi, he later traveled and taught in Central India. At that time, an elder named Xianggao arrived leading a son to look upon and pay homage to the Venerable One, saying, "This child remained in the womb for sixty years, and is therefore named Nansheng (Hard to Bear). I also once met an immortal who said that this child was extraordinary and would become a Dharma vessel, and that upon meeting the Venerable One, he should be allowed to leave home." The patriarch immediately shaved his hair and conferred the precepts. At the time of the karmavācanā, auspicious light illuminated the seat, and thirty relics miraculously appeared before them. From then on, he advanced vigorously, forgetting fatigue. Later the master addressed him, saying, "The Tathāgata's great treasury of the eye of the Dharma I now transmit to you; protect and mind it." He then spoke a gāthā, saying: "True principle is originally nameless; / by means of names, true principle is revealed. / When one receives the true and real Dharma, / it is neither true nor false." Having transmitted the Dharma, the Venerable One entered the samādhi of cessation and attained parinirvāṇa. The assembly cremated his true body with scented oil and sandalwood, collected the relics, and built a stūpa at Nālandā Monastery. This was the thirty-third year of King Jing, the jiayin year.
