(17) In the first year of the Yuanxing era, the Venerable Puṇyatāra of Tianzhu arrived in Qin, followed by several hundred śramaṇas of doctrinal learning. At the Middle Monastery, he produced the Sanskrit text of the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya (Ten Recitations Vinaya), and Master [Kumāra]jīva translated it. When halfway through, Puṇyatāra passed away. It happened that the śramaṇa Dharmaruci arrived, who was also skilled in the vinaya. Master [Hui]yuan of Mount Kuang was delighted to hear of this and dispatched a letter to Guanzhong urging [Dharma]ruci to bring forth the rest of the vinaya and complete it. Ruci thereupon continued with Master [Kumāra]jīva to finish it. The full perfection of the monastic vinaya began from this time.
