Of the Ji surname, named Chang. He received the mandate of Yin to be the Western Earl, and after nine years in all, he died at the age of ninety-seven. He was a descendant of the Gaoxin clan. Boyi and Shuqi were the sons of the ruler of Guzhu; yielding the state and refusing to serve, they heard that the Western Earl was good at caring for the aged, and submitted to him. The likes of Taidian, Hongyao, San Yisheng, Yuzi, and Xin Jia all submitted to him. Lü Wang, over eighty years old, was fishing by the Wei River; the Western Earl, while hunting, carried him back in his carriage and honored him as Taigong. When the lords of Yu and Rui disputed fields, they sought an arbitration from the Western Earl; entering his borders, they saw plowers yielding the boundary ridges and travelers yielding the road, and returned in shame, yielding the disputed fields without taking them. Hearing of this, more than forty states among the feudal lords south of the Han River submitted to him. When the Western Earl died, his son Fa succeeded to the throne.
