They were the descendants of Yu Zhong, the younger brother of Taibo. Formerly, the Old Duke Danfu (King Tai) had as his eldest son Taibo, his second son Yu Zhong, and his youngest son Jili (King Ji). Jili fathered Chang (King Wen). When Chang was born, there were sage omens. Taibo and Yu Zhong knew that the Old Duke wished to establish Jili in order to pass the succession to Chang, so they fled to the Jing barbarians, tattooing their bodies and cutting their hair so as to yield to Jili. This was called Gouwu, and he was styled Wu Taibo. He had no son. Yu Zhong fathered Ji Jian, Ji Jian fathered Shu Da, and Shu Da fathered Zhou Zhang. When King Wu conquered the Yin, he sought their descendants and found Zhou Zhang, who was already ruling over Wu; he thereupon enfeoffed him in Wu (now the territory of Pingjiang Route in Zhexi Circuit, ancient Yangzhou). For thirteen generations down to Quqi, the chronology cannot be verified. When Quqi's son Shoumeng acceded, Wu first grew great and claimed the title of king, after which it can be recorded. It began in the first year of King Wu, a jimao year, and ended in the third year of King Yuan, a wuchen year. There were twenty rulers and 650 years. Goujian of Yue extinguished it.
