Shuyu was the younger uterine brother of King Cheng. In the king's fifth year, he cut a paulownia leaf into a jade sceptre and joked, "I enfeoff you with this." Scribe Yi asked to select an auspicious day. The king said, "I was only joking with him." Scribe Yi said, "The Son of Heaven does not speak in jest." The Duke of Zhou brought it to fruition, and so enfeoffed Shuyu at the ancient ruins of Yao, entitling him the Marquis of Tang, with his capital at Yi. Shuyu's son Xie changed the name Tang to Jin, with his capital in Pingjin County (present-day Jining Route, which is Taiyuan Route, ancient Bingzhou; territory of Jizhou). Coming down to Marquis Zhao, he enfeoffed Marquis Wen's younger brother Chengshi at Quwo, titling him Uncle Huan. Coming down to Duke Jing, he moved to Xintian (Jiangyi), referring to Quwo as Old Jiang. In Jin, the years across the five generations from Shuyu to Marquis Li (Fu) cannot be verified. They can only be recorded after the accession of Marquis Li's son, Marquis Jing. Beginning in the fifth year of King Cheng, a gengyin year, and ending in the twenty-sixth year of King An, a yisi year, there were thirty-eight rulers spanning a total of seven hundred and forty-six years. Wei, Han, and Zhao jointly deposed Duke Jing of Jin to commoner status and divided his territory into three parts. Uncle Huan of Quwo fathered Earl Zhuang; Earl Zhuang fathered Duke Wu. Successive generations served as rulers of Quwo; they grew powerful and constantly possessed the ambition to destroy Jin. In the second year of King Hui, Duke Wu attacked Jin and extinguished it. At that time, an envoy of the Son of Heaven happened to be in Jin. The grandees therefore requested a mandate on his behalf from the envoy of the Son of Heaven, and the envoy of the Son of Heaven requested a mandate from the Son of Heaven. The king sent Haofu to mandate Duke Wu of Quwo to become Marquis of Jin on account of his armies. Uncle Huan was the son of Duke Mu of Jin.
