The Dharma of the Four [Noble] Truths consists of suffering, origin, cessation, and the path. First, the truth of suffering: separately, it is the twenty-five states of existence; collectively, it is birth and death in the six realms. Second, the truth of origin: namely, the afflictions of view and thought, also called [afflictions of] view and cultivation, also called the four abodes, also called defiled nescience, also called the affliction of grasping marks, also called branch nescience, also called common afflictions, also called afflictions within the realm; though the names differ, they are simply view and thought. Third, the truth of cessation: ceasing the aforementioned suffering and origin to reveal the all-pervading true principle; because cessation accords with the true, cessation is not [itself] the true reality. Fourth, the truth of the path: briefly, morality, concentration, and wisdom; extensively, the thirty-seven factors of awakening. The factors of awakening are the four foundations of mindfulness, the four right exertions, the four bases of psychic power, the five spiritual faculties, the five powers, the seven limbs of awakening, and the eightfold noble path. However, among the four truths, there is a distinction between the mundane and the supramundane. The first two truths are mundane cause and effect: suffering is the fruit, and origin is the cause. The latter two truths are supramundane cause and effect: cessation is the fruit, and the path is the cause. Moreover, why are mundane and supramundane [presented with] the fruit first and the cause afterward? Because the faculties of the śrāvakas are dull; when they know suffering, they sever its origin, and longing for the fruit, they cultivate the cause. It is for this reason.
