The Second Patriarch, the Venerable Ānanda, was a man of Rājagṛha. He belonged to the kṣatriya caste, was the son of King Śuklodana, and was the cousin of Śākyamuni Tathāgata. He was originally named Ānanda, which means "Celebrating Joy", and also "Joy". On the night the Tathāgata attained the Way, there was great celebration and joy in the king's household; hence he was named on that account. He went to the Buddha to renounce household life. He had heard much, was erudite, and had unobstructed wisdom. The World-Honoured One considered him foremost in dhāraṇī-retention, possessing great merit, receiving and upholding the Dharma treasury as water poured between vessels; he thus appointed him as his attendant. Arriving at this time when he was about to enter nirvāṇa, he came to the Gaṅgā River. He reflected that the disciples he had previously converted should assemble. In an instant, five hundred arhats descended from the sky. Among them were two arhats: one was Śāṇakavāsa, and the other was Madhyāntika. The Venerable One knew that they were both great vessels of the Dharma, and he instructed them, saying: "Formerly, the Tathāgata entrusted the treasury of the true Dharma eye to Mahākāśyapa; Kāśyapa entered meditative absorption and entrusted it to me. Now I am about to pass into extinction, and I transmit it to you. Receiving my instruction, you should listen to this verse:
'Originally I entrusted an existent Dharma;
Having entrusted it, I say there is no Dharma.
Each must awaken for oneself;
Having awakened, there is no non-Dharma.'"
He again spoke to Śāṇakavāsa: "Practice conversion well and protect and maintain the true Dharma, never allowing it to be severed." He spoke to Madhyāntika: "Formerly the Buddha predicted: 'Within five hundred years after my extinction, you will propagate the great Dharma in the country of Kaśmīra.' You should go there later to initiate teachings and conversions." Having spoken, the Venerable One leaped into the empty sky and manifested the eighteen transformations, entered the wind-swift samādhi, and passed into extinction. His relics were divided: one portion was offered to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, one portion was offered to the dragon palace of Sāgara, one portion was offered to the King of Vaiśālī, and one portion was offered to King Ajātaśatru. Each erected a jeweled stūpa to make offerings to them. This was during the era of King Yi of the Zhou (Zhengzong ji).
