The Third Patriarch, the Venerable Śāṇakavāsa: A native of the state of Mathurā, also named Śāṇavāsa. His surname was Vaiśya; his father was Lin Sheng, and his mother was Jiao Sheye. He stayed in the womb for six years before being born. In Sanskrit, *śāṇaka* means 'naturally occurring garment'—that is, the name of a nine-branched auspicious plant in the Western Regions. When a sage descends into the world, this plant grows in a clean and pure place. When Śāṇakavāsa was born, this auspicious plant manifested in response. Upholding the Dharma and carrying out propagation, he reached the state of Cāritra, where he obtained Upagupta to be his attendant. The patriarch questioned him, saying, 'How old are you?' Upagupta said, 'I am seventeen years old.' The patriarch asked, 'Is your body seventeen, or is your nature seventeen?' Upagupta said, 'Master, your hair is already white. Is your hair white, or is your mind white?' The patriarch said, 'Only my hair is white, not my mind.' Upagupta said, 'My body is seventeen, not my nature.' After three years, the patriarch shaved his head and conferred full ordination on him. At that time, he transmitted the True Dharma to him with a verse: 'It is neither phenomena nor mind; / There is no mind, nor are there phenomena. / When speaking of this mind and phenomena, / These phenomena are not the phenomena of mind.' Having transmitted the Dharma, he went into seclusion on Mount Urumuṇḍa, south of Kaśmīra. Later, in samādhi, he saw that his disciple Upagupta had five hundred disciples who were frequently negligent and indolent. Thereupon he went there and manifested the Dragon-Sprint Samādhi to subdue them, speaking a verse: 'Understanding is neither this nor that; / The ultimate sage has no long or short. / Eliminate your slighting and arrogant thoughts, / And quickly attain arhatship.' The five hundred monks practiced according to his instruction. The Venerable One then manifested the eighteen transformations and the Fire-Radiance Samādhi to cremate his body. Upagupta collected the relics and buried them on Mount Bhāgavā. This corresponded to the era of King Xuan (from the Zhengzong ji).
